Video Resources

These listings are the result of many hours of YouTube searching since March 2018. Links were live at that time (both YouTube and individual contributors withdraw materials from time to time); descriptions, etc., have been edited from the contributors' YouTube notes.

While care has been taken to ensure correctness at time of preparation, it is the responsibility of the viewer to practice good computer hygiene/ security. No responsibility can be undertaken for omissions or inclusions, including in the notes; and different search criteria or timing might produce a quite different listing.

The inclusion of any individual item or series is not an endorsement of the material, nor is the ommission of something an indication of anything other than I haven't yet seen it. Materials are ordered by country, and where possible all items in a series have been grouped together.

Each entry includes the item's YouTube title and url, the name (or alias) of the filmmaker or contributor, the date of posting to YouTube, and a [possibly edited] description.

Copy/paste the url into your browser or search for the title within YouTube.

My favourite Cuban Mill. Two foot six inch gauge 100-year old 2-8-0ss on huge cane trains or buzzing about the mill yard. What a model it would make. Now all gone although there are rumours that the locos survive [Filmed 1997, starts with local "scratchbuilt passenger train"]

Steam in India 2005 - Riga Sugar Mill
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvNRHzYqTtI -- blackthorne57 -- Published on Jan 22, 2014
In 2005 The Riga Sugar Mill, located in the north east of Bihar State, not far from the Nepal border, operated two metre gauge locos. A 1930 built Hudswell Clarke 0-8-0ST and a small Hunslet 0-4-0 diesel built in 1935. Ox carts were also used to bring a significant quantity of cane to the mill. Despite this ancient motive power, Riga Sugar Mill, is modern a factory and produces Sugar, Molasses, Bagass (the fibrous residue of cane burnt in the furnace to produce power), Ethyl Alcohol, Industrial Alcohol and fertiliser.

Java Mill Tour 1998
This is a light edit of the 1998 Java Sugar Mill Tour led by Rob Dickinson and assisted by TC (Tjeng Chiao). I have organised this from West to East as that was roughly the direction the tour took.
The footage includes some mills now closed, some that had steam-worked field lines at the time, some that have given up railways entirely and some that are now 100% diesel.
Now that steam remains in daily use during the season at only 3 mills (and two of these are fireless steam operations), this footage shows a much more steamy Java with lots of variety.

Java: A nice little miscellany
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzrsCP9Tabg -- John Raby -- Published on Oct 11, 2016.
This is pre-digital footage from Java which I converted to digital on mini DV tapes in 1999. Most of the footage dates from the early 1990s although it may have been shot as late at 1998 before I go my first digital camera.
I was mainly with Rob Dickinson when I shot this material and I recommend his pages on Java sugar mill steam to anyone who would like to research this topic further - http://www.internationalsteam.co.uk/internat.htm.
Mills featured include Pakis Baru, Trangkil, Gondang Baru, Tasikmadu, Kebonagung, Pagottan, Merican, Pesantren, Semboro, Wringinanom, Olean and in all cases with real working steam and in most cases with steam-hauled field trains.
