Above: Design sketch of John's Tooleybuc Sugar Tramways micro-layout.

I am getting back into narrow gauge (HOn30) railway modelling after a 15 year break.

You might like to see an overview of this incomplete layout.

I recently discovered Carl Arendt's site about Micro Layouts.

This has prompted me to break away, albeit temporarily, from my English style layout and take up his cubic challenge - a micro layout 500mmx500mmx500mm. In this case it will be... well, already is... 'Tooleybuc Sugar Tramway'.

I've built the base (from surfboard foam), built the mill, two bridges and timber retaining walls. My next step is to cover the foam with a thin screed of plaster, detailing as I go, then give the track base a final sand, background track colour and lay the track (Shinohara with 150mm nominal radius points).

I'm wrestling with point motors at the moment. I've adapted a Peco point motor (epoxy-glued) under a Shinohara point but not tested it yet. If it doesn't work I don't have a Plan B!
