Above: A selection of Queensland-style structures; more details below.
This page is the result of a 2016 reorganisation of the QldRailHeritage and ZelmerOz resources relating to the built structures and environmental elements which say 'Queensland'. Individually they are seldom unique to Queensland but together they allow the viewer of a scene --model or real-- to say 'that's Queensland!'.
Queensland doesn't have any spectacular mountain ranges but it does extend from inland desert, irrigated cotton fields and citrus orchards, open cut mines and cattle properties, sugar cane farms and tropical forests, to oceanfront tourist resorts and the Great Barrier Reef.
Because of limited resources early architecture relied on tin and timber and this was reflected in railway, industrial, commercial and residential structures. Today colorbond sheeting has replaced the tin and residences reflect more temperate climate construction but the semi-tropical and tropical environment remains and provides many modeling opportunities.
Some of the structures at right have become models or parts of models. Others are simply provided to help inspire the Queensland modeller to be more accurate in representing the local in which our model railways operate. A limited number of documents and image slide shows have been posted here. More will be added as time permits.
Visit the Capricorn Sugar Rail Museum (CSRM) (link above) for some photos of the construction of a Queensland-style country hotel and a number of other typical Queensland buildings.
